Golf Swing Technique

Any golfer can improve their game by improving their golf swing technique.

For every golfer a certain level of fitness is required since the actual physical exertion on the body when swinging the golf club is quite demanding.

So in improving your golf swing technique it would be wise to consider undertaking a fitness program which includes stretching your muscles before each game of golf.

By improving your general strength and flexibility your golf swing will have the fundamentals in place and then you can work on your technique on how to swing a golf club.

There are many aspects to concentrate on when perfecting your golf swing technique and it’s not just about preventing hooking or slicing the ball.

It’s possible to develop a reasonable golf swing by following the tips below.

  • Position yourself in line with the flag or target
  • Imagine a line between your golf ball and the flag or target
  • Put your club face square to the imaginary line
  • Stand with your body parallel to this imaginary line
  • Make sure that you have the correct grip on the golf club
  • Adopt the correct stance giving you perfect balance throughout the swing with your feet about shoulder width apart and your feet, knees and shoulders parallel to the imaginary line that leads from the golf ball to the flag or target.
  • For right handed golfers, stand with your right foot at 90 degrees to the imaginary line and have your left foot slightly open.
  • Your knees should be slightly bent and your torso should be bent forward slightly allowing your arms to hang freely in front of your body.
  • The weight of your body should be on the balls of your feet and not on your heels.

Now we have the correct grip and stance we are ready to learn how to swing a golf club.

Whilst maintaining the same grip pressure throughout the swing, rotate the arms NOT the hands keeping your back at the same angle.

Simultaneously rotate your arms, shoulders and hips so that your back is now facing the target and your weight is on the inside of your right foot.

The downward part of the swing starts with you rotating your hips and body allowing your arms to follow through to make contact with the ball. On contact your shoulders should be parallel to the imaginary line and then the swing is continued until the whole body is facing the target.

Don’t forget to breathe out as you swing downwards.

Relax your body throughout the golf swing – notice that it is a golf swing and not a golf HIT!

To get more power simply speed up the rotation of your body without losing any of the technique.

Don’t tense up your body during the swing

Breathe out as you swing downwards

Think about this – when you take a few practice swings you feel relaxed and your swing feels good and smooth. But, when you take your shot it doesn’t feel as good.

This is because when there’s no ball to hit you just swing the golf club and it feels comfortable.

But once you have a ball in front of you you’re concentrating on hitting the ball instead of just swinging the golf club.

Try to reproduce the smooth action of your practice swing when you take your shot. With a more relaxed golf swing and the correct breathing pattern you’re surely going to improve your golf swing technique.
